Ksa investigates unauthorized sports bets

10 December 2024
(PRESS RELEASE) -- The Dutch Gaming Authority has conducted an investigation into the offering of unauthorized bets on sports competitions by license holders. This included looking at matches and competitions, such as youth matches and amateur competitions and events, such as corners and cards. This offer is not allowed in the Netherlands, because there is an increased risk of manipulation.

In seven games, it was found that betting options were included in the betting offer on matches for participants under the age of 21. Two sides had also included unauthorized events in the betting offer, including yellow or red cards and corner kicks. This happened during football matches worldwide in the 2023-2024 football season.

The parties involved have been summoned to cease and keep the prohibited betting offer suspended. In addition, all providers who have not reported their unauthorized betting offer have been warned that they should be alert to these types of errors and report any incidents to the Ksa.

At a later date, the Ksa will carry out a check to see whether all parties have indeed stopped the unauthorized betting offer. If that is not the case, a sanction may follow.

In order to prevent the manipulation of sports betting (match-fixing) and to protect the integrity of the sport, Dutch gambling legislation prohibits sports betting on certain matches and match components (e.g. yellow and red cards). Because young people under the age of 21 may be easier to manipulate, it is not allowed to offer bets on matches participants under 21 years old. Negative or easily manipulated events, such as corner kicks and red or yellow cards, are also riskier for match-fixing, so you should not bet on them.
